A largely-attended event declared the sports complex open, to the applause of local stakeholders and authorities
On the 6th June, the ribbon was finally cut at Trieste Campus, marking the completion of the first phase of a pioneering public-private partnership for a sports facility in our region. The project, started in 2019, called for renovating a disused building owned by the Municipality of Trieste, for a total investment of over 6 million Euros. The inauguration ceremony was attended by approximately 300 people, including representatives of public authorities and youth sports associations, key figures in the project, students and Paralympic athletes.
Enrico Samer, President of Trieste Campus, and Andrea Razzi, CEO, highlighted how sports are a social driving force raising young people with values such as ethics and mutual respect. Inspired by U.S. colleges, Trieste Campus offers the local community not only a sports facility, but also a free after-school study and tutoring centre.
Several public officials and politicians, including the Mayor Roberto Dipiazza and the regional Governor Massimiliano Fedriga, praised the initiative and the public-private partnership model.
The Olympic fencer Margherita Granbassi cut the ribbon, and the Olympic swimmer Stefania Pirozzi, Trieste Campus’ testimonial, were interviewed on the significance of a similar facility in a city so devoted to sports such as Trieste.
The campus features a fully-equipped indoor gym, rooms for bodyweight exercises, fencing and karate, and outdoor courts for tennis, padel and pickleball. Over the next few months, an adjacent indoor court for basketball and volleyball will be renovated, completing the second phase of the project. The facility will be used by several local sports organizations and will be open to the public by the end of June.
